Juntos Servimos began operations as a nonprofit corporation on November 1, 2004 but represents the formalization of the work being done by our Executive Director, Larry Cox, and Medical Director, Dr. Nancy Rodriguez, that stretches back over several years.

1997

Dr. Nancy Rodriguez, a medical doctor, started working in a medical clinic sponsored by the Catholic Church located in Derechos Humanos, a colonia built on top of a former garage dump in an area in southeast Matamoros.

 2000
Larry Cox began work in the Matamoros area at a children’s home located southwest of Matamoros (Casa Bethel). Volunteers led by Larry made significant improvements to the original buildings that housed over 80 children and then participated in the construction of a new facility for Casa Bethel.

2001
Larry began focusing his efforts on a group of colonias, including Derechos Humanos, built on top of a former garbage dump in an area in southeast Matamoros. Over a three year period, Larry coordinated volunteer groups in the construction of over 50 homes in this area. In addition, he helped the residents of the colonias get better medical care and food and water.

2004
Dr. Rodriguez teamed up with Larry to provide the colonias in southeast Matamoros with a coordinated program of medical care, nutrition (food and water), sanitation, housing, and educational assistance. Dr. Rodriguez had been serving the people of the area for a number of years before joining with Larry to provide a comprehensive set of coordinated services that focused on improving the quality of life of the people in the colonias. The construction of a permanent facility to include a medical/dental clinic, temporarily housing for the chronically ill and homeless, and a community kitchen was begun (“Casa Bugambilia”). Juntos Servimos was founded to support the activities in the colonias. Juntos Servimos was incorporated on October 25, 2004 and began operations on November 1, 2004.

2005
The work in Matamoros continued to grow. Casa Bugambilla was expanded to house more people requiring chronic care. The community kitchen, staffed by community volunteers, fed hundreds of people every week. As the medical needs expanded, a building was donated for use by Dr. Rodriguez as a permanent medical clinic in the Cinco Demarco colonia. In the summer, Hurricane Emily devastated the gulf coast of Mexico south of Matamoros. The fishing villages were devistated. Many houses were destroyed, and miles of shoreline were washed away. With the help of volunteers, Juntos Servimos stepped in with efforts to supply food, clothing and materials to the fishing villages on a weekly basis. For many families, this is all they receive while they rebuild their homes and their lives. Juntos Servimos also began work with communities in the interior of Mexico in the state of San Luis Potasi.
